Biden announces another $7.4 BILLION in student loan debt wiped

The White House has announced it is wiping out another $7.4 billion in student loan debt for 277,000 borrowers, bringing the total canceled by the Biden administration to $153 billion.

It is 81-year-old Biden’s second large-scale effort to forgive billions in debt in a week in a scheme critics say is a bid to ‚buy votes‘ before the general election.

On Monday, the administration rolled out a plan that would impact combined some 30 million borrowers after his first bid was blocked by the Supreme Court last year.

Now more borrowers seeing their student loan debt forgiven will receive emails informing them of the move on Friday.

‚From day one of my Administration, I promised to fight to ensure higher education is a ticket to the middle class, not a barrier to opportunity. I will never stop working to cancel student debt – no matter how many times Republican elected officials try to stop us,‘ Biden said in a statement.

The debt being canceled Friday is for borrowers in three debt forgiveness programs already in use including a plan that 18 GOP-led states are suing to block.

President Biden touting his latest proposals to cancel student loan debt for millions of Americans during a visit to Madison, WI on Monday. On Friday, the administration announced it was canceling an additional $7.4 billion in debt under programs already implemented bringing the total forgiven so far to $153 billion

Nearly 207,000 borrowers are seeing some $3.6 billion in debt cancelled through President Biden’s SAVE plan, which the administration began forgiving student loan debt through earlier this year.

Another 65,000 borrowers are seeing debt wiped through administrative adjustments to the Income-Driven Repayment (IDR) plans. To date, https://chungchinghecacloai.com/ the administration has wiped out $49 billion in debt through IDR plans.

Third, an additional 4,600 public servants are seeing their debt forgiven through the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program.

In total, 4.3 million federal student loan borrowers have seen student loan debt forgiven since Biden took office.

‚It shows we’re relentless in what we’re doing to help millions of hardworking Americans with the burden of student loan debt,‘ Education Secretary Miguel Cardona said of the multiple rounds of debt canceled.

The Biden administration has canceled $153 billion in student loan debt through a series of efforts including the SAVE plan as well as changes to Income-Driven Repayment and Public Service Loan Forgiveness plans

The bulk of the debt being forgiven on Friday comes through the SAVE plan, an income drive repayment plan that cuts down on the amount to time and money some borrowers have to pay before their student loan debt is forgiven.

The Biden administration announced it was launching the program last summer.

In February, the White House announced the first group to see debt canceled under the plan, and the Education Department said it would continue to identify borrowers who qualify on a continuing basis.

Eight million borrowers are enrolled in the plan to date. 4.5 million of those borrowers have a monthly payment of $0, and over one million have monthly payments of less than $100, the White House said.

However, Republicans have blasted the effort to cancel debt and accuse the president of attempting to ‚buy votes‘ ahead of the election.

They’ve called the student loan debt cancelation unfair to taxpayers who did not take on massive student loans for school or have the opportunity to go to college.

Two lawsuits have been filed by Republican state attorneys general against the Biden administration’s income-driven repayment program known as the SAVE plan

The Republican attorneys general of 18 states are suing the Biden administration over the SAVE plan. One lawsuit signed onto by eleven states was filed in Kansas on March 28 while another with seven states was filed in Missouri earlier this week.

Rise in teen boys demanding rough sex, choking girls as young as 12

There is a disturbing rise in the numbers of teenage boys demanding rough sex and choking partners as young as 12, new research revealed.

A recent survey by Dr. Debby Herbenick, known to be one of the foremost researchers on American sexual behavior, questioned 5,000 women anonymously at a ‚major Midwestern university,‘ the New York Times reported.

Almost two-thirds of women who responded said they had been choked by a partner during sex – but an even more worryingly statistic emerged: 40 percent were between the ages 12 and 17 the first time choking happened.

During a previous survey, the figure was far fewer at 25 percent (or one in four).

Experts warned that the normalization of rough sex during popular culture, the widespread accessibility of pornography and social media are driving this trend.

A concerning trend shows an increase in teenage boys demanding rough sex, including choking, from partners as young as 12. Porn and popular culture appears to be to blame. Pictured, Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan in the 2015 film Fifty Shades Of Grey

In last year’s single, by Jack Harlow, ‚Lovin On Me‘ begins with the lyrics: ‚I’m vanilla baby, I’ll choke you, but I ain’t no killer, baby.‘

The survey’s findings corroborate those of another writer and researcher specializing in sexual behavior, Peggy Orenstein, a sexuality researcher and college professor, who notes the rise in the choking phenomenon during sex.

Orenstein states how she was startled in early 2020 when during a Q&A at a high school, a 16-year-old girl came to her asking: ‚How come boys all want to choke you?‘

Then in a separate class a 15-year-old boy asked: ‚Why do girls all want to be choked?‘

One of the most common forms of rough sex is referred to as ‚choking‘, although specifically it is a form of strangulation as it sees pressure being placed on the neck.

Bother Herbenick and Orenstein say strangulation is becoming more widespread

Autoerotic asphyxia – when someone restricts oxygen to their own brain for the purposes of arousal – isn’t new, with cases documented since the early 17th century.

But, historically, it has been ’niche‘ and an overwhelmingly male pastime.

Peggy Orenstein, a sexuality researcher and college professor has noted the rise in the choking phenomenon during sex

Dr. Debby Herbenick, known to be one of the foremost researchers on American sexual behavior, questioned 5,000 women anonymously. 1 in 4 said they were choked between the ages of 12 and 17

‚Sexual strangulation, nearly always of women in heterosexual pornography, has long been a staple on free sites, those default sources of sex ed for teens. As with anything else, repeat exposure can render the once appalling appealing. It’s not uncommon for behaviors to be normalized in porn, move within a few years to mainstream media, then, in what may become a feedback loop, be adopted in the bedroom or the dorm room,‘ Orenstein writes in a piece for the New York Times.

‚Twenty years ago, sexual asphyxiation appears to have been unusual among any demographic. That’s changed radically in a short time, with health consequences that parents, educators, medical professionals, sexual consent advocates and teens themselves urgently need to understand.‘

Popular culture appears to have much to answer together with how widely accessible pornography has become, coupled with the influence of social media.

Herbenick recalls how during a 2008 episode of HBO’s ‚Californication,‘ the practice of choking was depicted where it was still both unusual and startling.

The trend only accelerated following the release and success of ‚Fifty Shades of Gray‘, the booking coming out in 2012 and film three years later.

By 2019, it appeared to have been normalized with a high school girl being choked in the pilot episode of HBO’s ‚Euphoria‘ and 2023’s ‚The Idol‘.

In last year’s single, by Jack Harlow, ‚Lovin On Me‘ begins with the lyrics: ‚I’m vanilla baby, I’ll choke you, but I ain’t no killer, baby.‘

Herbenick told the New York Times she is concerned at how widespread rough sex has become among young people and is keen for all parents, teachers and caregivers to be aware of the trend and possible harm it can cause.

In her book, Herbenick describes ‚rough sex‘ as a varied group of sex acts including choking, smothering, spanking and slapping.

She noted how during sexual activities between women and men, the woman is nearly always the person on the receiving end of rough sex, and the man is nearly always the person doing the choking or slapping or smothering.

Her research appears to suggested that many young people believe  sex is supposed to be rough.

Young men learn about rough sex from pornography, whilst young women pick up on it from social media memes and TikTok. Both sexes also pick up on ideas about rough sex from friends and popular culture including music and TV shows. Pictured Dakota Johnson in 50 Shades of Grey

In another survey from last year the average age at which young people first see pornography, whether on purpose or by accident, is 12 years old.

It means many teenagers are now watching pornography several years before they are ever sexually active with a partner.

The continual bombardment and exposure to rough sex through porn in turn sets up expectations as to how sex is ’supposed‘ to be. The ideas are also not being countered by proper sex education in schools or at home.

Herbenick says that when college students are asked why they participate in rough sex, they generally say because it feels exciting or adventurous.

If they don’t take part, they worry they will be branded as boring or be ‚vanilla shamed‘.

She notes how some young men worry they won’t be viewed as masculine if they don’t choke or slap their partner.

Herbenick states that young men learn about rough sex from pornography, while young women pick up on it from social media memes and TikTok.

Both sexes also pick up on ideas about rough sex from friends and popular culture including music and TV shows.

She reassures that they’re not bad people if they’re interested or have tried this – just merely responding to the world around them from popular culture, social media or perhaps after being asked by a partner.

But she wants parents to inform their children of the dangers rough sex can bring – namely that choking and strangulation can cause brain damage and death with no ’safe‘ way to choke anyone.

Those who are being choked find it hard to breathe or speak meaning a person’s ability to give consent or being asked to stop are often not possible.

>The Impact of Industrial Activity on Psychological Well-being

Research suggests that residential proximity to industrial activity has a negative impact on psychological well-being. Living near industrial facilities can lead to increased stress, anxiety, and decreased overall mental health.

One factor contributing to this impact is the perception of neighborhood disorder. The presence of industrial activity can create a sense of chaos and instability, which can significantly affect an individual’s psychological well-being.

Furthermore, personal powerlessness plays a role in the negative effects of industrial activity on mental health. When individuals feel that they have little control or agency in their environment, they are more susceptible to experiencing psychological distress.

It is important to note that the impact of industrial activity on psychological well-being is not evenly distributed among different populations. Minorities and individuals from low-income backgrounds are often disproportionately affected by living near industrial facilities. This disparity in mental health outcomes highlights the intersectional nature of environmental injustice and its impact on marginalized communities.

Public health officials and policymakers must prioritize addressing the mental health impacts of industrial activity on communities. This can be achieved through implementing stricter regulations on industrial emissions and pollutants, as well as investing in targeted mental health services for affected individuals.

„Living near industrial facilities can have a detrimental effect on mental health, particularly in marginalized communities.“ – Dr. Jane Richardson, Environmental Health Expert

To illustrate the disparities in the impact of industrial activity on psychological well-being, the table below compares the percentage of individuals reporting poor mental health in different income groups:

Income Group Percentage Reporting Poor Mental Health

Low-income 32%

Middle-income 20%

High-income 12%

As demonstrated in the table, individuals from low-income backgrounds are more likely to report poor mental health compared to those from higher income groups. This emphasizes the need for targeted interventions and support for communities facing the negative impacts of industrial activity on psychological well-being.

The Relationship Between Stress and Mental Health

Sociologists have identified the „stress process“ as a framework to understand the impact of stress on mental health outcomes. Stress can stem from various sources, including life events and chronic strains associated with specific social roles and contexts. While discrete life events may cause temporary distress, research suggests that chronic strains have a more significant and long-lasting effect on psychological well-being.

Recent studies have shed light on the role of neighborhood context in shaping mental health outcomes. The presence of chronic stressors, such as industrial activity, in communities can contribute to persistent strain and negatively impact mental well-being. Understanding the relationship between stress and mental health is crucial for developing interventions and creating supportive environments.

Chronic strains have a greater long-term impact on psychological well-being than discrete life events.

Examining the relationship between stress and mental health provides valuable insights into the factors that contribute to mental health outcomes. By addressing chronic strains and stressors in neighborhoods, we can work towards creating healthier and more resilient communities.

Sources of Stress and Chronic Strains

Stress can originate from various sources, including:

Work-related pressures

Financial difficulties

Family conflicts

Relationship issues

Health concerns

On the other hand, chronic strains are ongoing stressors that individuals experience over an extended period. These can include:

Discrimination

Poverty

Unemployment

Caregiving responsibilities

Inadequate housing

The cumulative effect of chronic strains can significantly impact mental health and overall well-being.

Impact of Neighborhood Context

The neighborhood context plays a crucial role in shaping mental health outcomes. Studies have found that living in neighborhoods with high levels of environmental stressors, such as noise pollution, air pollution, and industrial activity, can contribute to chronic strains and increase the risk of mental health problems.

The exposure to chronic stressors in the neighborhood can create a sense of insecurity, powerlessness, and environmental injustice, leading to negative mental health outcomes. Industrial activity, in particular, has been identified as a chronic stressor that can significantly impact psychological well-being in affected communities.

Comparison of Sources of Stress and Chronic Strains

Sources of Stress Chronic Strains

Work-related pressures Discrimination

Financial difficulties Poverty

Family conflicts Unemployment

Relationship issues Caregiving responsibilities

Health concerns Inadequate housing

Understanding the relationship between stress, chronic strains, and mental health outcomes can inform interventions and policies aimed at promoting psychological well-being. By addressing the sources of stress and reducing chronic strains in individuals and communities, we can create a more supportive and resilient society.

Exploring Environmental Inequality and Industrial Activity

Environmental inequality studies shed light on the alarming disparities in the exposure to environmental pollutants faced by poor, working-class, and minority communities. The deleterious consequences of this exposure on physical and mental well-being cannot be understated. The environmental justice movement seeks to challenge the prevailing assumption that local industrial activity should take precedence over the health and safety of vulnerable communities.

A growing body of research is uncovering the deep-rooted effects of environmental inequality on mental health outcomes. Living in close proximity to industrial activity is often associated with negative psychological well-being, as many individuals perceive it as a potential health threat or a sign of neighborhood disorder.

„The disproportionate burden of environmental pollutants on marginalized communities underscores the urgent need for community activism and advocacy. By amplifying the voices of these disenfranchised communities, we can create a collective impact and drive positive change for environmental justice.“

Community activism plays a vital role in addressing environmental inequality and industrial activity. Grassroots initiatives that promote community engagement and empowerment have the potential to create lasting change. Through innovative strategies such as urban agriculture and increased access to public parks, communities can reclaim their spaces and mitigate the negative impacts of industrial activity. These endeavors not only foster a sense of ownership and resilience but also contribute to the overall well-being of community members.

Understanding the Environmental Justice Movement

At the heart of the environmental justice movement is the belief that no community should bear a disproportionate burden of environmental hazards. It advocates for equitable distribution of environmental burdens, challenging systemic inequalities. Through collaborative efforts between policymakers, researchers, and community members, the movement seeks to dismantle the existing structures that perpetuate environmental injustice.

The movement emphasizes the need for a comprehensive approach to address environmental inequality and industrial activity. It calls for policy changes that prioritize the well-being of marginalized communities and advocate for stricter regulations on industrial pollution. By combining scientific evidence, community empowerment, and advocacy, the environmental justice movement aims to create sustainable and equitable environments for all.

The Intersection of Climate Change, Environmental Justice, and Health Equity

Addressing climate change and promoting environmental justice are crucial for achieving health equity. Communities experiencing social and economic drivers of poor health outcomes are often at higher risk of exposure to environmental hazards. These cumulative health harms disproportionately affect low-income communities and communities of color.

Climate change poses significant threats to both human and environmental health. Rising global temperatures, extreme weather events, and changes in precipitation patterns can lead to increased air pollution, water pollution, and the spread of vector-borne diseases. These environmental hazards further exacerbate existing health disparities and contribute to the cumulative health harms experienced by marginalized communities.

Environmental justice is the principle of ensuring that all individuals, regardless of their race, socioeconomic status, or geographical location, have equal access to a clean and healthy environment. It recognizes that marginalized communities are often burdened with a disproportionate share of environmental hazards, such as toxic waste sites, industrial pollution, and poor air quality.

„Environmental injustice, including the unequal distribution of environmental hazards and benefits, exacerbates health disparities and reinforces existing social, racial, and economic inequities.“

– American Public Health Association

The Biden-Harris Administration acknowledges the interconnections between climate change, environmental justice, and health equity. Their strategic approach to addressing the social determinants of health includes promoting clean energy, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and investing in sustainable infrastructure. These efforts are aimed at mitigating the disproportionate impact of climate change on vulnerable communities and promoting equity in health outcomes.

The Cumulative Health Harms of Environmental Injustice

Environmental hazards, when combined with the social determinants of health, can have cumulative and long-lasting effects on individuals and communities. Exposure to toxic pollutants, poor air quality, and limited access to healthy food and green spaces can contribute to a range of health problems, including respiratory diseases, cardiovascular conditions, and mental health disorders.

In addition to the direct health impacts, the stress and uncertainty caused by living in environmentally hazardous environments can further exacerbate mental health disparities. Persistent exposure to environmental stressors, such as noise pollution or the fear of industrial accidents, can contribute to chronic stress, anxiety, and depression, leading to cumulative mental health harms.

Building Resilient and Equitable Communities

To address the intersection of climate change, environmental justice, and health equity, it is essential to prioritize community-led solutions and policy changes. This can include:

Investing in sustainable and affordable housing in environmentally safe areas

Expanding public transportation and reducing reliance on fossil fuels

Supporting community gardens and urban farming initiatives to improve access to healthy food

Increasing community participation in decision-making processes

By empowering communities to advocate for their rights and participate in environmental decision-making, we can create more resilient and equitable communities. The aim is to ensure that everyone, regardless of their background, has equal access to a clean and healthy environment that supports their overall well-being.

Community-led Solutions for Environmental Justice

Community engagement and data-driven solutions play a crucial role in achieving environmental justice. When communities come together and take proactive measures, remarkable transformations can occur. Two notable examples of successful grassroots initiatives are Elizabeth, New Jersey, and Chollas Creek in San Diego, California.

In Elizabeth, community engagement has been instrumental in improving air quality and addressing environmental issues. The residents, working in collaboration with local organizations and government agencies, have implemented data-driven solutions to monitor and reduce pollution levels. Through collective effort and education, they have significantly improved the quality of life for their community.

The community has transformed unused open spaces into thriving community gardens, providing nutritious food options and contributing to food security. These initiatives not only promote healthier lifestyles but also foster a sense of community pride and resilience.

Revitalizing watersheds is another essential element of community-led environmental policies. By implementing sustainable practices such as regenerative agriculture and stormwater management, communities can restore ecosystems, improve water quality, and mitigate environmental degradation. This approach ensures the long-term well-being of both the environment and the community.

Equitable access to public parks is also a crucial aspect of environmental justice. Communities should have equal opportunities to enjoy green spaces and recreational activities. Through collaborative efforts and advocacy, communities can ensure that public park access is not limited to certain neighborhoods or socio-economic groups.

Community-led environmental policies and programs hold the transformative potential to address environmental injustice and enhance the overall well-being of marginalized communities. These initiatives empower residents, promote sustainable practices, and create healthier and more vibrant neighborhoods.

By championing community engagement, supporting data-driven solutions, and advocating for equitable environmental policies, we can pave the way for a more just and sustainable future.

During the pandemic, many policies were implemented to expand access to mental health care, with a particular focus on telehealth services. Telehealth has proven to be a valuable tool, allowing individuals to seek help from the comfort of their own homes. It has increased access to mental health care, especially for those who may face barriers such as transportation or physical distance.

However, as the pandemic gradually recedes and pandemic-era policies come to an end, there is a concern that access to mental health care may decrease for millions of Americans. The potential expiration of these policies could pose challenges for individuals who have come to rely on telehealth services as their primary mode of accessing care.

Mental health disparities continue to persist, particularly among marginalized communities. Access to mental health care should be equitable and available to everyone, regardless of socioeconomic status, race, or geographic location. Efforts must be made to address these disparities and ensure that mental health care remains readily accessible.

The importance of mental health care access cannot be understated. Mental health is integral to overall well-being, and timely access to care can make a significant difference in people’s lives. It is essential to prioritize mental health and work towards creating a healthcare system that provides accessible and affordable care for all.

By addressing mental health disparities and promoting policies that support continued access to care, we can foster a society that values and prioritizes mental well-being. Investing in mental health care is not only beneficial for individuals but also for communities and society as a whole.

British Muslim clerics praise ‚beautiful‘ Taliban

British Muslim clerics who embarked on a so-called ‚fact-finding‘ mission to Afghanistan have praised the ‚beautiful‘ Taliban leaders for instilling freedom in the country following their rise to power amid the US pullout in August 2021.

The imams travelled to Afghanistan last summer as part of a trip organised by Prosper Afghanistan, a UK-based NGO that seeks to support rebuilding initiatives, and the Human Aid & Advocacy group.

The all-male delegation spent eight days touring Afghanistan and meeting with Taliban leaders, making statements on Afghan TV extolling their virtues, before returning to Britain to continue their praise of the Taliban at an event held at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL).

Muslim outlet 5pillars reported the trip aimed to ‚dispel myths‘ about Afghanistan following the Western media’s ‚complete distortion of reality‘ in the country.

A member of the group, Mufti Ismail Satia, told the 250-person-strong crowd at QMUL: ‚We went to Afghanistan with a very open mind… it brought back to me the stories of the Sahaba (companions of Prophet Muhammad) that we read.

‚They reminded me of those who sacrificed for Islam and those who were willing to do anything for Islam.‘

Shaykh Haitham Al-Haddad meanwhile defended the Taliban’s restriction of girls‘ education, claiming that any criticism of the move is nothing more than Western propaganda to demonise the hardline Islamists.

‚Western secular influences were being driven into the minds of the students who were speaking against the Shariah and many vices were creeping in… when it is time to rebuild the country we cannot tolerate division and therefore temporary suspension of liberal, secular education took place.‘

Armed Taliban security personnel ride a vehicle convoy as they parade near the US embassy in Kabul on August 15, 2023, during the second anniversary celebrations of their takeover

The trip organised in July 2023 came weeks before the Taliban celebrated the second anniversary of their return to power and the takeover of Kabul.

Taliban leaders point to the distinct lack of conflict in Afghanistan as evidence their government has brought security and peace to the nation, which for decades prior had been wracked by war.

There has also seemingly been a reduction in corruption, which was rife amid the two-decade-long rule of Western-backed governments thanks to the aid money poured into the country.

But human rights observers say this relative security was achieved by ruthless policing and a restriction of general freedoms – and has been blighted by an increase in terror attacks by extremist groups.

And the plight of women has become dire since the return of the Taliban.

Girls over the age of 12 have been mostly excluded from school and the government has also stopped most Afghan female staff from working at aid agencies, closed beauty salons, barred women from public spaces like parks and gyms and curtailed travel for women in the absence of a male guardian.

Journalism and activism, which also blossomed in the two decades of rule by Western-backed governments, has been significantly suppressed with a slew of media workers and https://chungchinghecacloai.com/ campaigners detained.

But these factors appeared to be of little importance for the British imams, who sang the praises of their hosts on Afghan television.

Suliman Gani, a Muslim chaplain at St George’s Hospital in the district of Tooting in London, said to the RTA network: ‚We are understanding your vision and it’s very, very positive … the government itself have set such an amazing vision which has really touched my heart and really impressed me and gives us more confidence.‘

Al-Haddad meanwhile dismissed the importance of women’s education and said the Taliban must focus on consolidating security, economy and spirituality.

‚Security [is] the first element of establishing a country and the second one is … economy and the third one then [is] the spiritual kind of dimension,‘ he said.

‚Then we can discuss other things about women’s education.

Speaking at QMUL, Hamid Mahmood, the founder of an Islamic girls‘ school in east London, told the audience of the freedom he felt in Afghanistan.

‚It was somewhat a quite sad and painful experience leaving that land because I will be very honest and I’ve said this very clearly that there was something there, a feeling [of] outright freedom,‘ he declared.

‚After speaking to many ministers we realised what freedom meant. They were trying to free themselves not just from physical oppression, physical subjugation and colonialism but also financial, economic and also intellectual enslavement.‘

But Zalmai Nishat, founder of the anti-extremist Etidal Peace and Democracy Foundation told The Times: ‚This is a perfect exercise of whitewashing and glorification of the Taliban… this security they talk about is at the expense of freedom and marginalisation of ethnic communities in Afghanistan.‘

A spokesperson for QMUL told The Times the event in September was not sponsored by the university, adding that it was jointly organised by Prosper Afghanistan and Human Aid & Advocacy.
